What is vegan fashion?

What does vegan fashion mean? It's a question that often sparks confusion and curiosity. Vegan fashion embodies a true philosophy of life where compassion for animals is at the heart of every choice . Much more than just a diet, veganism is defined as a complete lifestyle, where animal protection is an unwavering priority. It involves rejecting any product derived from animals, their exploitation, and the cruel testing to which they are subjected.

In the fashion world, this awareness is essential, as animals are also among the victims of this industry. Leather, fur, wool, down, silk... all these materials, omnipresent in the world of fashion, are banned in the vegan philosophy. They are the result of animal exploitation, hiding behind their luxurious appearance a reality of suffering and violence.

Every year, millions of animals are sacrificed to meet the needs of the fashion industry . More than a billion of them are killed for their skin, while140 million are victims of the fur industry. Faced with these alarming figures, vegan fashion takes on its full meaning . It refers to clothing and accessories made without any materials of animal origin .

Vegan fashion embodies a movement of awareness, a desire to put an end to animal exploitation and to promote respectful alternatives . By choosing vegan fashion, we can contribute to positive change, the protection of animals and the preservation of our environment .

In this new era of fashion, creativity and innovation blend harmoniously with ethical values. Designers and brands are committed to offering collections that combine style and awareness. Innovative and environmentally friendly materials , such as "vegetable leather," recycled fibers, and sustainable alternatives, are favored to create pieces without compromising on quality or aesthetics.

Animals and Fashion

Humanity's relationship with animals has always been based on exploitation. Animals are considered resources at human disposal. Every year, countless animals are killed solely or primarily for the production of fashion items, resulting in enormous suffering.

The fur

Although fur coats were widely decried in the 1980s and are no longer fashionable today, the fur trade has far from diminished. Unfortunately, the use of fur trimmings is increasingly common. Behind these pelts: mink, foxes, rabbits, raccoon dogs, and even raccoons are raised in atrocious conditions. 140 million animals worldwide are killed each year solely for their fur. 85% of these animals come from specialized fur farming.

The conditions in which these animals are kept are deplorable; they are forced to spend their entire lives in tiny, unsanitary cages, living in their own excrement. Throughout their lives, these animals are never granted a moment of comfort. If one of them is sick or injured, it will be killed without hesitation, in front of its family members. They are then killed for their flesh or fur in painful conditions, by gas, electrocution, poisoning, etc. No animal should be subjected to such horrors and suffering.
In Europe alone, there are around 6,000 fox and mink farms producing more than 34 million fox and mink pelts each year.

In California, several cities have banned all sales of natural furs: West Hollywood, Berkeley, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Fur is cruel and unnecessary!

Leather

Whether worn in a perfect jacket, carried by hand, or cinched around the waist, leather comes in all shapes and sizes. It has become more accessible, with prices plummeting . But behind the leather industry lies real human and animal suffering and an ecological disaster. Leather is one of the most toxic industries on the planet.
Every year, 1.4 billion cow, goat and sheep skins are processed into leather.

Cow

To transform raw hides into a finished product, 25 to 30 operations are required. The hides must be waxed, degreased, washed, and strengthened using a long list of products, such as enzymes, acid, and chromium. Then comes the dyeing stage. In Europe, the profession is highly regulated, and toxic products such as solvents have been banned for several years.

Problem: According to the UN, 80% of leather comes from developing countries, where working conditions, animal husbandry and environmental standards are much lower.

For example, in Dhaka, Bangladesh, tanneries still use chemicals such as solvents to tan faster and more cheaply. They also use mercury to fix the colors (a product banned in Europe for over 20 years). But at what cost? Workers and the environment are paying a high price. Most workers handle these chemicals without any protection, putting their health at serious risk.

Every day, 22,000 liters of toxic waste are dumped into the Buriganga River. There is no water treatment, resulting in significant health problems and heavily polluted ecosystems.

Another problem: Bags and shoes made in Asian countries pose a threat to consumers' health. Some of these items contain leather contaminated with chromium VI. In Europe, the threshold is set at 3 mg of chromium per kg . But some products, such as shoes, have been analyzed by a research laboratory and found to contain up to 40 mg of chromium VI!

Leather production harms not only workers but also animals and the environment.

Exotic leather

Many reptiles with "exotic" skin are also bred and killed for the purpose of making fashion accessories. Crocodiles, alligators, snakes, lizards, and more are the victims of this lucrative industry. Breeding these reptiles is synonymous with appalling living conditions, intense suffering, and horrific killings.

Baby crocodile

While there have never been so many crocodiles raised on farms, there have never been so few in the wild. Crocodiles are on the Red List of endangered species.
Exotic leather is cruel and unnecessary!

Very recently, an article of the Civil Code, voted on January 28, 2015, recognized that the animal is "a living being endowed with sensitivity" and that it is no longer considered as "personal property." This small revolution is partly due to the initiative of 30 million friends .
Yes, animals experience emotions!
Today, there are many vegan alternatives available to help you achieve a desirable style without harming animals.

Why choose vegan fashion?

Deciding to embrace vegan fashion means choosing a lifestyle that combines ethics and aesthetics, emphasizing respect for animals and the environment . It transcends the limits of appearance to create a true statement of compassion and responsibility towards all life forms that share our planet.

The primary reason for adopting vegan fashion is animal welfare. Animals are sentient, empathetic beings capable of expressing emotions as varied as those of human beings. By recognizing this fundamental truth, we must question our fashion practices and decisions. Vegan fashion offers an ethical alternative, eliminating the use of animal-derived materials, such as leather, fur, or wool, where practices are often cruel and inhumane. Opting for vegan fashion means choosing to support an industry that advocates respect for all forms of life .

Beyond the ethical aspect, vegan fashion is also more environmentally friendly . Cattle farming, for example, is responsible for approximately 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions , contributing to climate change. By choosing vegan fashion, we drastically reduce our carbon footprint. By avoiding animal-derived materials, we reduce waterpollution caused by toxic waste from tanneries, preserve our planet's limited natural resources, and contribute to the protection of biodiversity.

Vegan fashion is more than just a passing trend. It's a growing movement, driven by a community of conscious and committed people. It represents an opportunity to rethink our relationship with fashion and choose sustainable and respectful alternatives. By choosing vegan fashion, we show compassion for animals, rejecting the often cruel practices of traditional fashion.

Vegan fashion designers and brands are offering innovative collections, proving that ethics and beauty can go hand in hand. Innovative and environmentally friendly materials, such as plant-based materials, plant fibers, and recycled textiles, are used to design cutting-edge clothing and accessories. Vegan fashion thus offers a multitude of possibilities to express our personal style while respecting our values .
